Important Okanagan water study gets federal gas tax funds

October 26, 2007

The Okanagan Basin Water Board is getting $415,000 from the federal government. Water Board chair and Osoyoos Mayor John Slater says the money will go towards Phase 2 of the board’s study into the supply and demand on water in the valley. Slater says when you regionalize projects, like the water study, it’s much easier to get funding from senior governments. Kelowna-Lake Country MP Ron Cannan was on hand for the announcement Friday. He says the Okanagan has beautiful scenery but it means nothing if we don’t have water. The cash is coming from the federal gas tax. Slater says they are well into phase 2 of the 3 phase study and should have data they can start working with by early 2008. The complete study will be finished by 2009.
