Native Plant Restoration at Northern Trailhead areas

Project Year:

2020

Project Budget:

$148,250

WCQI Grant:

$10,000

Organization:
Friends of the Okanagan Rail Trail

Project Description:

The goal is to restore native vegetation within the corridor (discontinued rail corridor) at northern trailhead areas of the Okanagan Rail Trail (ORT). By placing a priority on environmental restoration at this important trailhead area, and highlighting conservation and water values through communications, we hope to encourage an ecological management approach for other areas along the Okanagan Rail Trail, and to encourage hundreds of thousands of trail users to adopt environmental ethics. The Okanagan Rail Trail from Coldstream to Kelowna is acting as a model for a long term proposal for a trail from Sicamous to Osoyoos and south of the border. From a recreational trail perspective, this project can help establish best practices that will inspire other recreational trail corridors to respect “One Valley/One Water”.
